Christophe Paudiss
(Lower Saxony 1620/1630 - Freising 1666/67 )
Portrait of a Rabbi

We are grateful to Dr Walter Liedtke and Dr Christopher Brown who both examined the painting and confirmed the attribution to Paudiss.
Paudiss was a student of Rembrandt and active in his studio around 1642, together with Fabritius. Later he worked at different Hungarian and German princely courts.  Our work can be situated during Paudiss latest period in Vienna, where he was working for the archduke Leopold Wilhelm and the Fürstbischof of Salzburg.
As his small surviving oeuvre shows, he was a most unorthodox painter, influenced by his teacher Rembrandt but yet with a ver personal style. Typical are the yellow and silvery tones and the mystic atmosphere, an atmosphere of reflection and introspection ("uyt den Gheest").
Oil on Canvas, 63,5 x 50 cm.
