Madonna and Child with the Veil

As Marlier and Ainsworth are suggesting the subject and composition are probably derived from Jan Gossaerts "Madonna and Child" (now on loan in the Mauritshuis, Den Haag from the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, inv. nr. 830). Several other versions are known, the major part of a much lesser quality. Some of them are attributed to "Paul Coecke", Pieters bastards son who seemed to have been inspired by Gossaert. Our version is very comparable to the one sold at Koller (23 March 2007, lot nr 03013) in style and execution, however there are differences in the landscape and some other details like the cherries. Another version in Brussels (Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten, inv. nr 587) is quit close in execution.
The large dimensions, different pentimenti and the specific landscape are proving the originality of our work. Possibly the painting was the middle-panel of a tryptic, the traces of hinges on both sides of the original frame are also pointing in that direction.
