This worked-out study is possibly made for a large "Adoration of the Sheperds", seen the jacket of sheepskin and the mans attitude. It was usual in the 17th century (certainly in Antwerp and in Rubens his workshop) that after preparotary sketches (drawings and oil sketches) some maine figures and characters were featured and worked out. These "study-heads" were also usefull for other paintings and quit often we see the same models apearing on different works.
