Impoverished and neglected, the son kneels at the staircase of his parentel house. His father welcomes him with open arms and a servant offers new clothes. The biblical story of the prodigal son became more and more popular in Flanders since the 16th century.
The "trompe-l'oeil"-effect in our little grisaille (brunaille) makes the spectator more involved and emathized.
