Jan Lievens' (Leiden 1607 - Amsterdam 1674) landscapes were strongly influenced by Flemish Masters, in particular Rubens. A dense forest combined with a minimum of incidence of light. Human figures are usually second-rate and hardly elaborated.
Similar landscapes by the artist can be found in Germany and London (British Museum, London, Museum Number 1895,0915.1198).
