Blanckerhoff was a pupil of César Van Everdingen and joined the Saint Lucas Guild in Alkmaar. He resided shortly in Italy, where he became a member of the Roman "Bentvueghels", that is where he also obtained his nickname "Jan Maet".
Back in the Northern Netherlands, he mainly worked on behalf of the admiralty where his main focus were war-related topics.
