Very clear and interesting pentimenti appeared under the infrared, yet the painter remains anonymous. Photograph with personal descriptionin by  M.J. Friedländer in his archive : on good quality oak panel. / size : - / greenish background & brown / dress. / Face & left side of white / headress original early 16th / Century paint. / Dress much rubbed also back / part of headress, also stippled. / Paint thin & / shows pencil / drawings under / the paint Cox./b.(ei)Salisbury/ V1948). 
Another version of a lesser quality of the present composition was offered at Christie's, South Kensington on 21 April 1988, lot 74 as Manner of Quentin Massys.
