Rubens painted his 'Lions den" (National Gallery of Art in Washington, inv./cat.nr 1948) somewhere between 1613-1617. Some of the preparatory studies for the original were preserved.
The original by Rubens knew an instant-succes and this religious depiction was widly copied. The dimensions of our painting make us believe it had a private destination instead of a religious one.
