2 Deer Calfs

This exceptionally large oil sketch on paper can be situated in the surroundings of Jan Fyt and his pupil Pieter Boel. Hunting scenes and -booty were quit popular in the Southern Netherlands in the 17th century. Our painting is a study, probably made for a very large project that was then exhibited in a hunting castle, -lodge or huntingroom.
The provenance of the painting makes one dream; it is not unlikely that the painter Henri Toulouse-Lautrec saw or even admired our work on several occasions because he liked staying in the family-castle of Malromé on many occasions (also his father was known to be a notorious hunter).
