Jan Pieter Van Baurscheit left his homeland Germany to apprentice with Pieter Scheemaeckers the Elder. In 1694, he joined the Antwerp Guild of St Luke and established himself as a sculptor and architect. He soon became the leading sculptor (and architect) of the late 17th and early 18th centuries in the Low Countries.
Our statue is very typical of the master: not only did he specialise in putti, angelic figures etc but stylistically this statue is also very prototypical. His sculptures show characteristics of both the Rubensian Baroque ( with sculptors such as Lucas Faydherbe and Arthus I Quellinus) and the more classisist movement (cfr Duquesnoy's later work and sculptors active at the court of Louis XIV).
