Jan Pieter Van Baurscheit left his homeland Germany to apprentice with Pieter Scheemaeckers the Elder. In 1694, he joined the Antwerp Guild of St Luke and established himself as a sculptor and architect. He soon became the leading sculptor (and architect) of the late 17th and early 18th centuries in the Low Countries.
