A Cavalry Battle scene with an Italian City beyond

Born in France, Jacques Courtois (called "il Borgognone" or "le Bourgignon") spend the largest part of his life in Italy, mainly in Rome and Florence.  Experienced by his military career (he fought 3 years in the Spanish army) he became a leading battle-scene painter who inspired lots of Italian painters but also Bamboccianti. He became a Jesuit later in his life but continued to paint.
Courtois painted in a recognizable and very dynamic style, used sponteously brus strokes and often worked "alla prima".

French-Italian School, Oil on canvas, 61,5 x 115cm
