Jan Philips Van Thielen
(Mechelen 1618 - Booischot 1667 )
Vase with Flowers

Jan Philips Van Thielen was a native of Mechelen and descended from a noble family. He settled in Antwerp and was later apprenticed to Daniël Seghers, whose influence on Van Thielen's work was great (both in composition and his manner of painting).
Nevertheless, he developed a very personal style and his works are easily recognizable. Among other things, they are characterized by a fresh colorite and great refinement.
Van Thielen worked together with Erasmus Quellinus (also his brother-in-law) and Cornelis Schut for whom he made so-called “cartouches” in which he took care of the floral part. Our work is a self-contained and autonomous floral still life. In a very fine and sensitive way the flowers are depicted in a glass vase.
