Lucas Franchoys II
(Mechelen 1616 - Mechelen 1681 )
Portrait of a Man in Armour
Lucas Franchoys II ("The Younger") came from a well-known Malines family of portrait painters. He was apprenticed to his father Lucas Franchoys I ("The Elder") and his brother was Peter Franchoys. He possibly later became a pupil of Rubens in Antwerp, although - as is clearly visible in our portrait - he was strongly influenced by the style of Anthony Van Dyck.

After a short stay in France, the painter returned to Mechelen in 1654, where he set up a studio and, besides portraits, received many religious commissions from churches and monasteries.
Our portrait shows profound psychological insight, is very much ‘Van Dyckian’ and very aptly and smoothly painted.
