Christ as the Man of Sorrows

This poignant depiction of Christ as the Man of Sorrows, attributed to a follower of Bernard van Orley, presents a deeply devotional image of Christ crowned with thorns and encircled by a radiant halo. Shown from the shoulders up, the figure bears visible drops of blood on the neck and chest, emphasizing both physical suffering and spiritual sacrifice.

The restrained palette and intimate composition reflect the influence of Van Orley, a key figure in Flemish Renaissance art. Intended for private devotion or chapel use, the painting combines emotional intensity with refined craftsmanship.

This work embodies the transition from late medieval spirituality to Renaissance humanism, and stands as a testament to Van Orley’s enduring impact on religious art in the Low Countries.
The painting is in very good condition and was auctioned as Barend Van Orley in 1978 (Christie's London, 26/05/1978, no. 79). Since then, it has been in a Scottish collection.

Oil on panel, 18,1 x 14,3 cm
